Competition Authority Turns Four

The Competition Authority turned four years old on 18th April 2015. It was on this day in 2011 that the Chief Executive Officer, Mr Thula Kaira, reported for duty as the first and only employee of the Authority, and immediately started work to set up the secretariat, operating from the Botswana Bureau of Standards office in Gaborone.

The Authority has since blossomed into a vibrant organisation with its own offices and more than 30 employees who carry out its statutory mandate of promoting and maintaining fair competition in Botswana's economy.

In the execution of its mandate in the past four years, the Authority has among other things investigated collusive tendering cartels, removed barriers enabling entry of some businesses into the market, prevented anti-competitive mergers, and carried out market studies aimed at levelling the playing field.

In a speech to staff to celebrate the fourth anniversary, Mr. Kaira thanked past and present employees for the great work that they put in to make the Authority what it is. He urged staff to be results oriented and to strive for impact “we have passed through the honeymoon phase and Batswana expect results from us” Kaira said.
