Competition Authority Celebrates Fifth Anniversary

The CEO of the Competition Authority, Mr. Thula Kaira, has said the most important thing that has been done for the consumer is to set up the Authority which has the power to investigate and prosecute anti-competitive cases.

Kaira was speaking this morning at a press briefing at the CA offices on the occasion of the Authority's fifth year anniversary. He said the CA’s role of removing barriers to market entry ensures that there are more suppliers and the consumer ultimately benefits from competitive pricing and employment opportunities among others.

Meanwhile the acting CEO of the Competition Authority was introduced as Ms. Tebelelo Pule. Kaira said the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry appointed Ms. Pule as acting CEO until a substantive is identified. Pule is currently the Director of Corporate Services.

Mr. Kaira, the founding CEO of the Competition Authority elected not to ask for a renewal of his contract when his term came to an end and today is his last day of duty.  In response to why he did not seek a renewal of his contract Kaira said it is because he has completed his major task of setting up the Authority, training staff and showing them the ropes in terms of investigations and advocacy. Kaira, a Zambian national, further said he availed an opportunity for localisation of the position.
