Botswana and South Africa Sign Mou to Enhance Competition Law Enforcement

The Competition and Consumer Authority (CCA) and the Competition Commission of South Africa, (CompCom) have signed an MoU to enhance cooperation in the field of competition law enforcement and policy. The MoU was signed by the Chief Executive Officer of the CCA Ms. Tebelelo Pule, and CompCom Commissioner Mr. Tembinkosi Bonakele.

According to the MoU, the two agencies will exchange views on substantive competition policy issues; work jointly on the development of scientific and methodological research in the field of competition law enforcement and policy, render technical assistance to each other; as well as exchanges of expert studies, staff and non-confidential information.

Speaking at the recent signing ceremony on the sidelines of an OECD meeting in Paris, Ms. Pule said the CCA is excited and optimistic about the opportunities that emanate from the partnership. “we are very aware of Compcom’s reputation of busting cartels, regulation with excellence and its strong commitment to create a market place characterised by a level playing field.”

Pule said likewise, Botswana’s competition authority has earned its own place by making timely interventions in the Botswana market place to stop anti-competitive conduct and practices whose effects had direct impact on economic growth.

“No single regulator, no matter how large or well endowed, can address future challenges by itself. In this era of globalisation and interdependence, cooperative partnerships with other economic regulation institutions around the world is not an option, but a necessity,” Pule said.

For his part, Mr. Bonakele expressed appreciation for the formalised partnership with CCA, noting that it will make it easier for both institutions to carry out their mandates.
